Bright Spots on a Dark Canvas

I don’t know about you, but its tough for me to watch the news these days.  So much gloom and doom.  So much hopelessness.  Its not that I don’t get that we are in an unprecedented recessive economy.  Rather it’s just that I choose not to wallow in misery when there are good things each day to celebrate, even amidst the darkest news.

For example, there were two recent pieces of positive industry news that brightened my day.  First, an article in Nutrition Business Journal which confirmed something we all have long suspected; that this gloomy economy has yet to force supplement sales into a severe slump.  Specifically, that Nielsen shows supplement sales up almost 6% in FDM retail channels over the past 52-week period.  That may not represent the booming growth we were once accustomed to, but it does signal the resiliency of the consumer’s commitment to the self-care movement.

In addition, the 2009 Cone Consumer Environmental Survey results released in the past week indicate that 34% of American consumers say they are more likely now to buy environmentally responsible products, with another 44% saying their environmental shopping habits have not changed as a result of the declining economy.  About 8% said they were less likely to buy.

My point here is that this business of selling natural and environmentally responsible products and services is not a passing fad, or even a trend.  It is the future.  I don’t know about you, but this kind of news assures me that I am in the right place doing the right thing.  And that makes me smile every day.
